BEAM: a horizontal or diagonal framing member spanning an open space
LINTEL: exposed horizontal crosspiece over a window or dorr that carries the weight of any structure above it
RAFTER: a bean that slopes from the ridge of a roof to the eaves
FRAMEWORK: the structure of a building or house
HEADER: the horizontal structural support above an opening
RIDGE BEAM: horizontal member that serves as support for the highest point of the roof structure
COLUMN: vertical support often resting on a base and consisting of a shaft
POST: vertical member used to support a horizontal beam of lintel
PILASTER: vertical member projecting from a wall with a base
PILLAR: vertical, noncircular masonry support
BASE: the bottom of a column, pillar, or pilaster
CAPITAL: the top of the column, pillar, or pilaster
SHAFT: long, vertical part of the column between the base and the capital
LOAD-BEARING: structural element that supports weight of other construction members
FINGER-JOINT: narrow extensions of wood that are cut in the ends of two pieces of wood to interlock and form a joint
MOLDING: shaped, decorative strip of material
CROWN MOLDING: wood, often decorative, used where the wall and ceiling meet
DENTIL MOLDING: a series of small, square blocks uniformly spaced and projecting like teeth
BASEBOARD: finish trim where the floor and wall meet
TRIM: visible woodwork or moldings in a room such as baseboards and casings
CASING: exposed trim boarding, framing, or lining around a door or window
CHAIR RAIL: wooden molding placed along the lower part of a wall
MDF (MEDIUM DENSITY FIBERBOARD): wood scraps acompressed together with a binding materialnd fibers
