PICK YOUR SUBJECT MATTER:
Determine what you wish to hang and the hardware needed to secure pieces to your walls. Purchase hardware rated for weight to allow support for oversized pictures and mirrors.
EXPERIMENT ON PAPER:
Configure your work by cutting shapes that match the size of your pieces from kraft paper and taping them to the wall.
PROTECT HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS:
Add hook and loop tape to a picture or mirror frame to hold the item against the wall.
CONSIDER THE GRID:
Align pieces along one axis (center, top, or bottom) when hanging a grouping.
ADD A SURPRISE ELEMENT:
Use contrasts to create interest by mixing round plates over a square sofa or vertical objects along a hallway's length.
DISPLAY IN ODD NUMBERS:
This allows for a more appealing display.
STAGGER HEIGHTS AND SHAPES:
This adds breathing room between pieces and unifies an area.
LAYER VIGNETTES ACCORDING TO HEIGHT AND SCALE:
The eye naturally travels to the focal piece so begin by hanging your favorite work first.
Hire an installer or handyman to help you hang heavy objects. A small fee to pay for perfection.
USE BULLETIN BOARDS:
Not only does this add interest but also serves a needed function.
HANG UNEXPECTED ART:
Look for chalkboards, initials, baskets, pottery, clocks, checkerboards, and other such items to hang on walls for added interest.
DRAPERY:
Use fabric as a backdrop for art or mirrors.
INEXPENSIVE WAYS TO MAKE WALLS LOOK GREAT:
Use postcards and magazine covers to make a secondary bathroom walls pop.
GO WITH A THEME:
Movie posters and sports memorablia make forgetable basements unforgetable.
TRAINS, PLANES, AND AUTOMOBILES:
Hang antique bikes from a wall or planes from the ceiling to complete a look. Works well in children's rooms.
UTILIZE SPACE:
Use a corner of your utility room as a wrapping center. Hang ribbon on a curtain rod and stack wrapping paper in a wicker basket.
