DREAM, REALITY, BUDGET
Prior to beginning a design or styling project, consider in a realistic manner how much you wish to spend for the project. Experts tell us that furnishing your house often costs almost one-third of the home's value, especially if your considering buying big ticket items such as applicances, electronic equipment, or large scale furniture pieces.
SIMPLIFY YOUR BUDGET PROCESS
Consider for what, then how, when, and where to spend your money.
Assume that your cost basis will run ten to fifteen percent more than anticipated.
Make a spreadsheet, categorizing the importance of each room (usually the main level) and make a long term plan.
Be honest and by doing so creativity often enuses.
Don't discount shopping at Marshalls, Steinmart, and Target for accent pieces to compliment those purchases that may cost a bit more.
Set attainable goals. Don't fixate on a few high-priced items, instead concentate on one room or one area at a time.
Research and bargain. Look at high and low priced options of comparable items. Check out flea markets, antique sales, discount shops, internet sites, and auctions.
Look at the structure of the home. Does it require any structural changes, the tearing down of a wall, the moving of a window? If so, factor in the cost of labor.
Take into consideration the market value of your home. While upgrades keep a home in style, you never want to price yourself out of your neighborhood.
Consider the length of time you intend to remain in the house as this affects the choices and investment.
RECORD YOUR DESIGN PLAN
Give your project a title.
Write down your budget for each room.
LIst the work that needs to be completed.
Prioritize tasks.
Review and revise your priorities.
Add project start and finish dates.
Break down large projects into phases.
Group smaller projects together which will save time and cost considerably less if using a designer.
Be patient; waiting for seasonal sales means extra money in your pocket.
Frame art in stock size mats and frames thus avoiding the cost of custom design.
Learn to craft, whether faux painting an old dresser or stenciling a chairrail. Most paint stores offer classes in these techniques.
Move existing furniture and accessories which gives a fresh feel to any room.
Don't be afraid to experiment with paint. It's the easiest mistake to make and the cheapest to fix..
Tear out pictures in design magazines and start a scrapebook or memory board to allow for duplication.
Carry paint chips, scrapes of fabric, and pieces of wallcoverings with you at all times.
