SMALL SPACE DESIGN
Limited space can provide homeowners with unneeded challenges but through the use of inventive and creative ways to utilize room size, small space can produce not only a big impact but an incredible sense of style.

Color consistency helps small rooms feel larger.
Define individual spaces through the use of area rugs, furniture, art work, or an accent wall color.
Install recessed lighting which adds height.
Limit the use of ceiling fans or hanging fixtures if your ceilings are low.
Use dimmer switches on your lights.
Take out walls to make more open areas.
Use versatile and multi-functional furniture such as an ottoman instead of a coffee table thereby adding an extra seating area.
Minimize scale, for example, use a loveseat rather than a sofa.
Use a sofa or loveseat that doubles as a bed.
Add built-in cabinetry for storage and display.
Create niches and window seats.
Use mirror and glass to help create a sense of space.
Neutral or cool colors work well in small spaces.
Balance and symmetry work best in confined areas.
Use a higher gloss paint which reflects light.
Anchor furniture groupings with area rugs.
Position furnishings away from the walls.
Add built-in bookshelves to a dining room.
Use an armoire as both an entertainment center as well as a work desk.
Utilize transparent items such as glass topped tables and acrylic chairs.
Avoid heavy, dark, and woven materials.
Use draperies to divide areas and give a sense of privacy or definition.
Wall mount cabinets to provide storage.
Consider closet systems.
Banguettes provide a more efficient use of space as eating areas.
Install flooring on a diagonal or diamond pattern.
Paint the ceilings a lighter color than the walls to increase height.
Display collectibles and heirlooms such as plates on the wall.
Remove or replace doors and utilize glass fronts to add depth.
Create moveable walls that add protect private spaces but also open to add square footage.
Hang artistic pieces from the ceiling such as mirrors.
Paint insets such as bookcase backs or shelves to draw the eye out of the middle of the room.
Leave unobstructed pathways.
Keep things light and airy.
Add architectual trim to ceilings and doorways.
Use a bench at a kitchen table for additional seating.
