START FROM THE GROUND UP: To start from the ground up means to begin with the floor or carpet and then move on to the furniture, window treatments, light fixtures. Instead evaluate the space, pick a color scheme, list all the elements in the room and decide which of those should stay or be removed.
KEEP THE COLORS MUTED: Many designer feel that muted tones add subtlety and refinement (which they do) which allows the furniture to do most of the talking. But what if your furniture isi lacking? Why not add interest with wall color or window treatments. Use an unexpected color to provide impact.
MIND YOUR PROPORTIONS: The belief is that using small prints in a tiny room creates the best result but sometimes it may also look dated. Think outside the box. Use a bold large scaled print on the walls. Consider adding an elegant drapery over a petite window.
LESS IS MORE: Minimalism is often elegant but sometimes boring and occasionally disallows the ability to individualize a room. Embellish your creation by adding pillows, mirrors, and art. Group items together in an unexpected way.
NEVER MIX STYLES & PERIODS: People often feel pressured to design their homes by selecting a style but mixing periods creates interest and whimsy. The contrast between modern and ancient is striking so use the "old" and "new" in your home.
WINDOW TREATMENTS MUST BE SEWN: There is nothing more beautiful than the craftsmanship of a finely sewn drapery but other options are available for those more budget wary. Use old napkins, quilts, feed sacks, birthday streamers, and paint. Handcrafted pieces showcase your style and taste, not your pocketbook.
DRAPERIES EQUAL LENGTH: Traditionally defined window treatments usually lay just above a floor or carpet but a wide range of lengths are perfectly acceptable. Some may pant break, others might puddle, but curtain should reflect the proportions of the windows and the statement being made in the room's design.
USE CURTAINS ON WINDOWS: Draperies traditionally cover something but fabrics may be used to add drama to your decor. You can hang a panel behind a sofa, use a treatment as a headboard, or mount curtains to divide a room within a room.
ONLY USE DRAPERY FABRICS: Never hesitate to use material in unusual ways. Old coats, faux furs, and quilts can add wit and style to any room. A sheet set provides a creative way to make any window pop.
DIFFERENT IS WRONG: Some people shy away from anything out of "the acceptable." Kooky can be refined, can be elegant, and can be in good taste. A whimsicaly item can maximize and enhance a room's appearance.
