RAILING OR HANDRAIL:  the horizontal bar that supports and connects the balusters

BALUSTER:  an upright supporting post or spindle between the railing and the floor or tread

BALUSTRADE:  a series of small posts or balusters connected by a handrail

NEWEL POST:  large post used to anchor the railing at each end

FINIAL:  formal ornamentation fixed to the top of a post

STAIR CARRIAGE:  vertical material on the side of the stairway that creates the support for the steps

TREAD:  the upper horizontal part of a step

FIREBOX:  the chamber of a fireplace where fuel is burned

HEARTH:  an area of noncombustible material that the firebox sits on

SURROUND:  material usually on all three sides of the opening

MANTEL:  the construction or facing around a fireplace

MANTELPIECE:  the fittings and decorative elements of a mantel above a fireplace

OVERMANTEL:  an ornamental panel above the mantel itself

RUMFORD FIREPLACE:  a fireplace that is tall and shallow and reflects more heat

ZERO CLEARANCE:  a fireplace that can be installed with wood framing directly against metal

MASONRY FIREPLACE:  a fireplace made of stone, rock, or brick

FACE FRAME:  cabinets that have a hardwood frame on the face of the cabinet box that masks the raw edges of the plywood or particle board

EUROPEAN:  cabinets that replace solid wood face frames with edge banding; usually offering no reveal of the box itself with hinges (typically hidden) attached to doors

RAIL:  horizontal member of a panel or frame

STILE:  vertical member of a panel or frame

RECESSED PANEL DOOR:  a door panel that has been routed, shaped, or otherwise decorated

EUROPEAN HINGE:  fully concealed hinge that is mortised into the inside of the cabinet frame or door

BUTT HINGE:  exposed hinge composed of two plates attached to abutting surfaces of a door and joined by a pin

APPLIQUE:  a carved or decorative piece of material applied to the surface of another material
